Don't Let These Myths Steer You Away From Breast Augmentation Surgery

The decision to get breast augmentation surgery is a big one. For some women, the surgery definitely is the right choice, and others decide -- after doing some research -- that it is not, in fact, a good choice for them. Regardless of the conclusions you reach, it's important that you reach them based on facts, not myths. So here are four breast augmentation surgery myths that you should not let steer you away from getting the surgery.

Myth #1: Breast implants automatically mean someone is vain and shallow.

You may have heard some less-than-scrupulous folks express their opinions that anyone with breast implants is a shallow, brainless bimbo. But you know yourself, and you know you are an intelligent, capable person. Augmenting your breasts is not going to change that. There are many reasons why people want breast implants, and one of the biggest ones is to improve self-esteem. Boosting your self-esteem is definitely a smart choice since it will allow you to excel in your career and social life. So don't listen to the haters; trust your own intelligence.

Myth #2: Breast implants only last 10 years.

This may have been true a few decades ago when prosthetic breasts were not as advanced. But today's breast implants are made to last with far fewer leaks and less scar tissue buildup. Many women never have to have their breast implants replaced in their lifetime, though you will want to have yours looked over by a doctor every year or two just to make sure they're in good shape.

Myth #3: Inserting a "fake" part in your body will irritate your immune system.

You may have heard stories about women with implants developing an immune-related illness post-surgery. These stories are just coincidences. More than likely, the women in the stories would have developed the same diseases even if they had not gotten their implants. Breast implants are made from non-bioreactive substances, which means your body does not detect or react to the substance.

Myth #4: Breast augmentation surgery is terribly painful and difficult to recover from.

It is a surgical procedure, but many women are pleasantly surprised by how easy the recover period is. You will want to take a few days off from work, but you can probably return to most normal activities within a week -- although while wearing a special wrap to support your chest. Over-the-counter pain relievers can keep you comfortable.
